Blue whales, scientifically known as Balaenoptera musculus, are the largest animals on Earth. With lengths reaching up to 100 feet (30 meters) and weighing around 200 tons, these colossal creatures make even the mightiest ships seem small in comparison. Despite their massive size, blue whales are filter feeders, subsisting mainly on tiny shrimp-like organisms called krill.

Every summer, blue whales embark on extensive migrations to reach regions abundant in krill. These tiny, shrimp-like crustaceans are a vital source of nourishment for blue whales, as a single adult can consume up to 4 tons of krill in a day. To put this into perspective, that’s roughly equivalent to the weight of an average car!

To efficiently consume vast quantities of krill, blue whales employ a feeding technique called “lunge feeding.” While submerged, a blue whale will locate a dense aggregation of krill and accelerate toward it with remarkable speed. As it nears its prey, the whale opens its massive mouth, engulfing a gargantuan amount of water and krill. The water is then expelled through the baleen plates in the whale’s mouth, while the krill remains trapped, ready to be devoured.
