Responding promptly to a distress call about a Weimaraner on death row at a high-kill shelter, rescuers were shocked to find a dog with a massive tumor on his underbelly, struggling to stand.
Dubbed Gilbert Grape, his journey to recovery was shared by Keri Pink, a media relations volunteer with Tickled Pink Weimaraner Rescue (TPWR). Gilbert’s tale reflects a remarkable transformation from despair to hope.
The shelter’s protocol allowed 72 hours for strays to be claimed, but pre-approved rescues like TPWR could intervene earlier. Two dedicated volunteers alerted TPWR, prompting swift action.
Transported to a specialty veterinary facility, Gilbert needed blood transfusions and stabilization before a life-saving surgery. The cost was substantial, but the decision to save his life was clear to rescuers and veterinary staff.
Gilbert, estimated to be around seven years old, underwent successful surgery and a speedy recovery. Pathology results revealed the tumor as benign, and Gilbert has been cancer-free since.
Despite muscle loss and physical strain from carrying the tumor, Gilbert’s resilient spirit shines through. He embarks on a physical therapy regimen to improve his mobility.
Gilbert’s story resonated with many, leading to adoption inquiries. A year later, he found a loving family who supports him through his hip dysplasia diagnosis and provides him with swimming therapy.
Gilbert’s journey serves as a beacon of hope, illustrating the transformative power of compassion and community support in the face of adversity.
