In the frigid temperatures of Saskatchewan, where the thermometer dipped to a bone-chilling minus 50 °C or minus 58 °F, an unexpected arrival added a warm touch to the cold landscape.

Bonnie Potoroka, a farmer in Saskatchewan, headed to check on her pregnant heifer named Summer, only to discover that the calf couldn’t wait for warmer weather. Born prematurely, the newborn calf faced the harsh elements, and its ears were already starting to freeze.

Realizing the danger, Potoroka took immediate action, bringing the shivering calf to the heated store for shelter. The little one, yet to be named, found comfort not only in the warmth but also in the company of an unexpected friend.

Enter Mickey, the Potoroka family’s Collie. This farm pup formed an instant and heartwarming bond with the newborn calf. When not in the stable with its mother, the calf and Mickey became inseparable companions.

Baby cows, much like human infants, spend a significant amount of time sleeping. Potoroka describes their adorable routine, saying, “She will lie down on the rug, and he will come to her side and lie down next to her. They usually just sleep together.”

While it remains uncertain how this interspecies friendship will evolve as the calf grows, Potoroka is hopeful that Mickey’s newfound friendship will stand the test of time. It marks the first time Mickey has formed such a close connection with the farm’s inhabitants, making this heartwarming companionship all the more special.

For now, as the temperatures continue to plummet outside, the unlikely duo of a Collie and a baby calf is creating a heartening warmth that defies the cold surroundings, reminding us that bonds can flourish in the unlikeliest of places.
