On Christmas Eve, Mam Nata found herself abandoned in front of the Instituto Amor em Patas (IAPA), and she carried an additional burden – she was about 8 weeks pregnant and on the verge of giving birth.
When the volunteers at IAPA discovered her, Mam Nata was in a dire state. Weak and unable to stand, she was also terrified, her owner having left her behind due to anxieties about her impending puppies. It took some time for the shelter volunteers to soothe her and ease her fears. Initially guarded, Mam Nata used all her energy to keep them at bay, fiercely protecting her unborn pups. However, as time passed, she began to relax her guard and became more sociable.
Volunteers noted, “Look at her belly – it may be 13 or 14 babies inside. We attempt to schedule her test for tomorrow because she is quite weak.” The volunteers prepared for a long night, anticipating an ultrasound to ensure everything was in order.
With the necessary support for the delivery of her pups, Mam Nata returned to the shelter and successfully delivered the first baby – a vibrant young boy.
“Can you count how many puppies there are? It’s 14 – Natajuli gave birth to 14 adorable babies.”
Subsequently, Mam Nata and her 14 babies underwent a short check-up, ultrasound, and blood tests at the vet. The mother dog was exhausted but satisfied. Her 14 puppies were all plump and healthy, bringing immense joy to everyone involved.
One volunteer shared, “I almost sobbed when I saw her smiling, her babies are so lovely – I just want to kiss them.”
As the caretakers forgot to name the 14 tiny pups, they turned to the online community for suggestions. Anyone who wanted to contribute a name was encouraged to do so in the comments, adding a personal touch to these adorable new additions.
